3D Transportation Improvement

Agha Engineering utilizes innovative techniques and software applications to analyze the geometric design of transportation projects in complex environments. Corridor models developed in 3D are used to detect design challenges in the early phase of every project. Multi-modal networks are combined to perform clash detection and geometric conformity. Horizontal and vertical geometries are designed in correspondence with current design standards and criteria. Design checks are performed to meet minimum horizontal curve radii and vertical curve profile requirements for safety.

Conventional sight distance checks are performed to verify stopping sight distance, decision sight distance, passing sight distance, and intersection sight distance. Sight distance on horizontal curves is checked in plan view for visual obstruction. However, in cases of complex geometries sightlines in 3D are utilized to compensate for steep on-grade and grade-separated scenarios. Software applications such as OpenRoads Designer and AutoTurn 3D are utilized to develop a 3D spatial line of sight distance check for obstruction, merging ramps, and under-crossings. Decision sight distance is analyzed in a realistic 3D environment to determine if the current design is appropriate for the proposed design speed.
